Work Experience – Robert Smith.

We have a fabulous Work Experience placement here at Vivid Brighton for approximately 6 months. During Rob’s time here we have asked him to write about his experiences……

“I have just started my work placement with Vivid Brighton, it’s a great opportunity. We have only had two afternoon sessions so far which have been geared towards relaxing into the environment and getting to know each other a little better; first things are first, after all. I have been shown where the tea comes from, a massively important step forward in this journey.

So, what have I actually done? The first session saw me picking out some photos from some archives the project has access to, to be used for the penultimate design (for the national Where To Go For site, being funded by Comic Relief and The Nominet Trust) which is being sent out for critique. This might sound like the easiest thing ever; not so in my experience. However, I found a few gems in rough, proffered them forth to Paddy who sifted through and chose the provisionally useful images.

Though we started by reviewing the Where To Go For website design (complete with provisional images, giving a sense of realism to the pre-functional designs) and the new-to-me mobile web version of the site, the second afternoon was of a contrasting nature. Spent mostly shadowing the designers as they tackled some very different projects, I got to ask a some questions and learned a little about industry standards for dpi/ppi in both screen graphics and graphics designed for print; I also learnt what kerning is. An insight into the relationship between designers and developers presented itself too. I had not previously considered the factors involved, and apparently there’s a fair few.

There was also time to converse about what we might achieve with this work placement; a question warranting an answer laden with auspiciousness. To be frank, if the time shared so far is anything to go by the future should be about learning the processes creative professionals utilize, as well as a bunch of task-specific tips and tricks. In partnership with my continued pursuit of web development/programming and recent introduction with Illustrator, I am excited to see my skills and confidence grow.”

Vivid Brighton are thrilled to announce that we are part of a successful partnership (alongside YMCA Sussex Central and Mind Brighton & Hove) that have won a national website project (supporting young people with mental heath issues) – funded by Comic Relief and Nominet Trust.

The 18 month project (currently called My Places) is to brand, design, build & market a website specifically for young people across the UK who require Mental Health support services in their area. The aim is that the website will be the first point of contact for any young person requiring help & support with this sensitive issue.

The tender process for the project, funded by Comic Relief and other organisations such as Nominet Trust, was open to all across the UK. Working in partnership with Sussex Central YMCA and Mind Brighton & Hove, Vivid Brighton were successful in being shortlisted and then invited to present to a panel of eight individuals representing all grant provider organisations.

The project began in March 2013 with a view to launching across the UK by June 2014.

We have just received a fabulous Testimonial from a client for whom Vivid Brighton has re-branded. It highlights the added value we bring to every project……

“We started working with Vivid Brighton in 2012 on a company rebrand and website replacement project. We knew our time would be tight so from the outset we were looking for a supplier who would put the leg work in upfront to understand us, our customers and inspire us with a great solution. We were impressed by Paul and the team’s enthusiasm from the initial meeting and they spent time through the tendering process detailing how Vivid Brighton could take the project forward and add value. We had a choice of three suppliers and while Vivid Brighton’s costing sat at the top end of these, we were ultimately persuaded through their passion for the project, their interest in us and that they could go above and beyond the other suppliers. We are now close to the end of this project and we know that….they really do care about the end result, they will work to get it right, they will push us in new directions, they are of a size to give personal attention and that when we need to refine they will be there ready to assist. We are immensely pleased to have found Paul and his team at Vivid Brighton and look forward to evolving our brand with them in our stores, in print and online in the years to come.”

Your brand is your company’s most important asset and must be viewed as far more than just a logo. When consumers think of your company, what are the things they think about? Society is becoming increasingly more knowledgeable and therefore more critical about brand design & image. They have higher expectations than ever before and, with it, a lower tolerance for anything that is not perfect. Establishing a brand should address everything, from your logo, to stationery, to marketing literature and of-course a website. Every single item you ever produce should maintain a coherent look and feel. You must develop a brand identity that is high quality and really reflects who you are as a company. This does not necessarily mean that if you are construction businesses that you should have a house, or that if you are a lawyer that you should use a scale. Developing a logo goes beyond the actual content, to the style and image you are portraying. A cheap logo will look cheap no matter how much it says what you do. Remember, you aren’t just saying WHAT you do; you are also saying HOW you do it.

Following on from the brand identity and website project for ‘Where To Go For’ (an online directory of support services for young people within the Brighton & Hove area, commissioned by Right Here / Mind Charity) Vivid Brighton have developed a responsive smartphone version of the website. All our sites are fully compatible with phone and tablet browsers however there is an increasing demand for dedicated smartphone sites, infact Google have recently recommended responsive web design. These provide the visitor with a stripped down version of the website providing simple and clear navigation specifically designed for smartphone screens. The demand for this kind of website was made very apparent when the ‘Where To Go For’ phone version went live – it doubled their site visitors that day!
